During teacher appreciation week from Monday May 6th through Sunday May 12 all teachers and school staff will receive 20% off of all Bookshop purchases. Members of the Teacher’s Club receive an additional 5% discount.

Students at Westlake Elementary School are highlighting their artistic endeavors during the months of April and May. Westlake Elementary School students’ will host their 18th Annual Arts Fair ~ Day of Dance on Friday, April 19, 2013 in addition to exhibiting their art work during the months of April and May at the Santa Cruz Public Library Children’s Room in downtown Santa Cruz.
Westlake Elementary School is dedicated to supporting a standards based sequential arts curriculum in the visual and performing arts. This year every student will perform during our Annual Day of Dance. Under the direction of dance providers Papiba Godinho, Dawn Imbrie, Ibu N’gom, Myra Rittenhouse and Jo Washburn, Westlake students will demonstrate a variety of dance styles, including creative movement, folk dance, Capoeira, traditional African dance and Hip Hop. The dance program is funded by Westlake families and The Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. Activities during the Day of Dance begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m.
Additionally, more than 25 Westlake Elementary Schools currently have their artwork on display in downtown Santa Cruz in the Children’s Room of the Santa Cruz Public Library. Under the direction of credentialed art teachers, Stephanie Young and Myra Eastman, students in grades K-5 explore and a wide variety of visual art techniques, including perspective, shading, color mixing and idea development. Students also study famous art masters and art trends throughout history. The students develop a strong foundation in the visual arts which enables them to further their studies at the middle and high school level with confidence.

On Monday, April 22, Bay View Elementary will celebrate and recognize their outstanding commitment to being green.
The many steps Bay View has taken will be recognizes with a green schools certification, an Arbor Day Proclamation by Mayor Hilary Bryant and recognition of the success of Bay View student Vince Golder’s video submission to the Scotties campaign to raise awareness for tree planting initiatives.
The celebration will take place at the school on April 22 at 1:00p.m.

The 5th annual Young Performers Showcase highlights talented youth from our community in a benefit to support school music programs. Produced by the dedicated volunteers of Cruzville Productions in partnership with the Santa Cruz Education Foundation, the event has helped to fund after school programs like El Sistema Santa Cruz and our middle school Arts Academies as well as providing essential support for elementary, middle school and high school vocal and instrumental music programs.
The 2013 showcase features young artists from our schools and the community. Acts include the Santa Cruz High School Bagpipers, El Sistema Students from Gault Elementary, Marty O’Reilly, West Coast Voices, UCSC String Trio, Coffis Bros. Band, Jr. High Ukes (featuring performers from the Build-A-Uke program), Jackie Partida and Dressed in Roses, Escapade Dance Co., Sean Hayward, Harbor Hi Jazz Trio, and theTammi Brown Band.
