Each year the Santa Cruz Education Foundation helps to coordinate and raise funds to send 5th & 6th graders from Bay View Elementary, Westlake Elementary and Branciforte Middle School to Outdoor Science School.

Through Outdoor Science School, students are introduced to various forest habitats in the Santa Cruz Mountains and receive daily instruction in a hands-on field study approach in a natural environment. Classroom teachers from our schools accompany students attending OSS. Students experience cooperative camping and develop important social skills including respect, responsibility and reliability.

Students are also introduced to a series of physical activities that build confidence and trust in a group setting. Outdoor Science School is a time-honored tradition in Santa Cruz City Schools. For many students this is a life-altering experience that opens them to new possibilities regarding our natural world, science and their future.

This year three schools are poised to head off to OSS in May — but we still need support to get them there. During this difficult state budget crisis, the Santa Cruz Education Foundation is partnering with the community to coordinate OSS fundraising for all the schools and make sure that all students have the opportunity to attend. By contributing a full scholarship of $225 or more, you can guarantee a low-income student will be able to attend OSS. Donations of any size are welcome and go directly to the Outdoor School Scholarship fund. We hope you will join us in supporting this worthy and important program.
