More than 1.5 million high school juniors take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) test every spring. This September 50,000 students qualified for recognition; 34,000 of the highest scorers received Letters of Commendation in recognition of their accomplishment and promise. Just 16,000 are identified as Semifinalists; the highest scoring entrants in each state. Semifinalists will compete for Merit Scholarships totaling $34 million dollars. Seniors advancing to the Finalist level must have an outstanding academic record throughout their high school years, receive their principal’s recommendation, write an essay and achieve substantial SAT scores. National Merit Scholars will be named in the Spring.
