UCSC Farm, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Tomorrow 150 high school and middle school students from Santa Cruz City Schools will descend on the UCSC Farm to press apple cider, carve pumpkins, make healthy apple pies, take a hay ride, and consume delicious winter squash.
The innovative Food, What?! “by teens, for teens” approach allows students to embrace the farm experience, and in the process make connections with the source of their food. Events like the Harvest Festival make healthy food “cool” while addressing the social justice issues involved in making healthy food a right rather than a privilege.
Food, What?! is a collaboration between the UCSC Life Lab Science Program, the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems and the Santa Cruz City Schools Wellness Committee. This is the second event (following the Strawberry Blast last Spring) empowering local high school teens to “revision” school lunch and healthy food in their communities.
