Safeway officials marked Earth Day, April 22, with an open house for the community to highlight the many “green” aspects of their newest local store on the Westside of Santa Cruz. Bay View Elementary School 5th graders and students from the Green Careers program at Natural Bridges High School received personal tours of the facility getting an inside look at the first LEED designed Safeway location in the country.  The store features solar panels, electric fuel cells and nitrogen powered refrigerated trucks.

To underscore their support for the Santa Cruz community, Safeway officials presented the Santa Cruz Education Foundation with a $5,000 donation.  The funds will be used to continue our support of education programs including those that teach students about sustainability.
