Education scholar to lecture February 23

Diane Ravitch has come to be known as the leader of the “reforming the reformers” movement.  While our policy leaders look to renew the Early Secondary Education Act with an eye to carrying forward many of the key components of No Child Left Behind, Ravitch supports another direction.

In her book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education, Ravitch warns of the damage the high-accountability testing climate has done to students, teachers and schools. The punitive measures of No Child Left Behind that force communities to shutter schools when they’re not on the path to reach the unattainable goal of 100% proficiency by 2012 serve no one, she asserts.

The emphasis on English and Math drill and kill has cost a generation a love of learning and devalued critical thinking skills and enriching school experiences.
