On September 14, 2011, Whole Foods hosted Back to School Community Days at the Santa Cruz and Capitola stores to benefit the Santa Cruz Education Foundation, and in addition donated all of the proceeds from the September 24 Wings contest to the Foundation.

This generous support will:

  • Provide 10 full scholarships to send fifth graders to Outdoor Science Camp in the Spring where they will experience a week of hands-on science in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Igniting a passion for science is essential preparing students to access the challenging classes they need on the path to college and career. Outdoor Science School also builds an awareness for environmental stewardship and gives kids a safe and supportive away from home experience.
  • Help to launch the Branciforte Middle School Life Lab Garden.  As part of an entire field renovation, Branciforte Middle School will build a new outdoor garden classroom to support science and nutrition education.
  • Help to underwrite Food What?! led Farmers Markets at Gault Elementary School.  The Food What?! markets are operated by youth from our community to serve families from their own neighborhoods. This youth empowerment program not only teaches students how to grow, harvest, sell and prepare sustainable food, it teaches them business and leadership skills as they become role models in their own community.

Whole Foods presented the Foundation with a check for $5,000 on September 30 at the site of the future Branciforte Middle School Life Lab garden.
