The April 2011 Young Performers Showcase was a rousing success. The third annual event raised funds for Santa Cruz City Schools high school music programs; previous years benefited the music classes at our elementary and middle schools. Held annually at the Rio Theatre, the Young Performers Showcase features talented youth from throughout our community in music and dance performances. All of the net proceeds benefit school music programs.
Rick Linzer, the creator of the Showcase said, “We, at the Young Performers Showcase along with our sponsors, the Santa Cruz Education Foundation, are delighted and proud to provide $16,000 to the Santa Cruz City Schools for music programs to enrich the lives of our students.” Linzer will present district leaders with a check at the regular Board of Trustees meeting on October 12, 6:30 pm at the County Office of Education. The donation will be used to pay for sheet music, choir accompanists, instrument repair, stipends for music teachers and piano tuning. In addition to the support for high school music programs, the Young Performers Showcase will also provide financial support to ukulele programs at DeLaveaga Elementary and Branciforte and Mission Hill middle schools.
Over the course of this year, the Santa Cruz Education Foundation will lead a task force to re-imagine district music programs in all of our schools for students from Kindergarten through high school.
The 2012 Young Performers Showcase is set for Saturday April 21, 2012 at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz.
