In the Spring of 2012, Mission Hill art teacher Kathleen Crocetti and her students installed mosaics on the Water Street Bridge in Santa Cruz. The City Arts Commission has approved expanding the installation to Soquel Avenue bridge. The installations pay tribute to the San Lorenzo River and watershed. Each mosaic was designed and created by students as part of a multidisciplinary unit of study on the San Lorenzo River. View the television news coverage here.
The Water Street installation was funded through the Redevelopment Agency. With the disbanding of all California redevelopment agencies, that source of funds is no longer available. Crocetti is now seeking to crowdsource funding for the project using Kickstarter.
