In response to the tragic Newtown, Connecticut shooting, Santa Cruz City Schools trustees Cynthia Hawthorne, Ken Wagman and Deborah Tracy-Proulx have taken the lead in drafting a resolution calling for measures to reduce gun violence and address deficiencies in mental health funding and policies. The resolution opposes the call for placing armed guards in all public schools.
The school board will discuss the resolution at their meeting on January 16 (6:30 pm, County Office of Education, 400 Encinal St). They will also receive updates from district staff regarding school safety policies currently in place.
A national conversation spurred by the events in Newtown includes a call for action from President Obama, led by Vice President Joe Biden. News about the pending resolution has reached other school districts in our county and from districts from Los Angeles to New York. Santa Cruz City Schools leaders have offered to help other communities with similar efforts and resolutions.
