Outdoor Science School a memorable experience for 5th graders

BVOSS 2013Between February and May, over 360 fifth graders from Bay View, Delaveaga, Gault and Westlake Elementary schools attended Outdoor Science School, a 4-day/3-night hands-on science experience. Each year, the Santa Cruz Education Foundation facilitates funding and scholarships to ensure that every 5th grader is able to attend regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Thanks to generous Foundation donors, the many business supporters of the program, school parent organizations and individual parents, nearly $90,000 was raised to meet this goal.

This Spring students stayed at Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek where they learned about the San Lorenzo watershed and explored redwood, mixed forest, chaparral and meadow ecosystems. Their hands-on field study included a long day hike and night hike where they applied sampling, measurement, observation and comparison skills to ecology and astronomy studies.

The Santa Cruz Education Foundation is proud to support this meaningful and academically valuable program for all Santa Cruz City Schools fifth graders. We encourage you to support the many local businesses and thank the individuals that help to make Outdoor Science School possible:
